With negligent hiring currently one of the fastest growing areas of employment litigation, employers and Human Resources (HR) professionals need to implement legally compliant background screening processes to hire the best employees.

Employment Screening Resources (ESR), a background check firm located in Novato, California that is formally accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS®), has announced its founder and President, Lester Rosen, will present an educational session titled ‘Negligent Hiring and Background Checks: Best Practices and Legal Compliance’ at the Northern California HR Association (NCHRA) HR West® 2011 at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. PST. For more information or to register for the event, visit: http://www.hrwest.org/.

In the educational session, Rosen – an Attorney at Law and author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ the first comprehensive guide to employment screening – will show attendees why background checks and due diligence have become mission critical for employers and help them understand the basics of negligent hiring lawsuits and defenses that work – and those that do not – for employers.

Participants in the session will also learn:

  • Legally complaint best practices to keep their businesses productive and out of court.
  • How to obtain and utilize criminal records and background information on job applicants.
  • Steps to implement a legally compliant program to find good employees and avoid ‘bad hires.’
  • Cutting edge-issues such as the use of social networking sites for background screening and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) approach to the use of criminal records.

Rosen has previous experience speaking with Northern California HR Association (NCHRA), having spoken at numerous NCHRA chapter meetings and seminars and at past annual NCHRA conferences including 2010, 2009, 2007, and 2006. He also has presented at last five Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) national meetings.

Rosen is a frequent presenter nationwide on employment screening and safe hiring issues as part of the ‘ESR Speaks’ training program located at: http://www.esrcheck.com/ESR_Speaks.php. He was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded NAPBS, a professional trade organization for the background screening industry and served as the first co-chairman.

Affiliate of SHRM, the Northern California HR Association (NCHRA) is the 2nd largest HR Association in the United States with 3,000 members and serves an HR community of more than 20,000 people. The NCHRA HR West® 2011 will be held from Monday, April 11 to Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California.

Founded in 1996 in the San Francisco, California area with a mission to help both employers and employees maintain safe workplaces, Employment Screening Resources (ESR) wrote the book on background checks with ‘The Safe Hiring Manual’ by ESR founder and President Lester Rosen. ESR is formally Accredited by The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS®) and is also a Designated E-Verify Employer Agent helping U.S. businesses maintain a legal workforce.
